Facts on cats

November 11, 2007

Did you know ….

A cat’s heart beats twice as fast as a human heart, at 110 to 140 beats per minute.

The largest cat breed is the Ragdoll.   The smallest cat breed is the Singapura.

The domestic cat is the only cat species able to hold its tail vertically while walking.  All wild cats hold their tails horizontally or tucked between their legs while walking.

If your cat is near you, and her tail is quivering, this is the greatest expression of love your cat can give you.

The weirdest cat on record was a female called Mincho who went up a tree in Argentina and didn’t come down again until she died six years later.  While treed, she managed to have three litters with equally ambitious dads.

A cat will kill it’s prey based on movement, but may not necessarily recognize that prey as food.  Realizing that prey is food is a learned behavior.

The richest cat in the Guiness Book of World Records is a pair of cats who inherited US$41,000 in the early ’60s.  The richest single cat is a white alley cat who inherited US$250,000. (Now that will buy a lot of catnips!)

The Giraffe, Camel and Cat are the only animals that walk by moving both their left feet, then both their right feet, when walking.  This method of walking ensures speed, agility and silence.

It is believed that a white cat sitting on your doorstep just before your wedding is a sign of lasting happiness.  White cats are a symbol of good luck in America, while black cats are a sign of bad luck.

Your cat is probably either a “righty” or a “lefty.”  Only 40% of cats are ambidextrous while another 40% are either right-pawed or left-pawed.

Cats love high places.  They share this love with leopards and jaguars, who sleep in trees.

Domestic cats are essentially loners.   When placed in a group, they develop their own hierarchy.  As long as there is plenty of food on hand, a cat can learn to share it’s domain with other cats.

A cat that bites you after you have rubbed his stomach, is probably biting out of pleasure, not anger.

Ruby reclaims her bed

November 10, 2007

ruby.jpg

She looks so contented napping in her new bed & I am so happy for her.

Sometimes when I clean her gums, I am sad. I can’t help but imagine the pain she suffer when all her teeth were extracted.  How can anyone be that cruel? It could be my projected feelings on her.  I don’t know.  But I tell myself, no matter what happens in Ruby’s future, I will never allow her to suffer again.

Coca-Cola pulls funds on animal testing

November 10, 2007

Coca-Cola has recently put an end to all animal experiments on its beverages.

Did you know that Coca-Cola used to conduct invasive and deadly animal experiments—including cutting open chimpanzees’ faces in order to conduct taste tests and force-feeding chemicals to rats to test “caramel color”?

Other food & beverage corporations that have ended animal experimentation on their products include PepsiCo & Welch Foods.

Gone cold turkey

November 10, 2007

I have been trying hard to keep my vegetarian diet and lately I have fallen off the wagon so many times I am walking with a sore butt almost everyday.

To help myself to stick this vegetarian resolution, I have signed up the pledge with Peta, to go absolutely cold turkey for a month as of NOW.

Everytime I succumb to the temptation of meat I always felt bad after the meal.  It is like, I guess, commiting adultery.  You know it is bad & it is hurting but I can’t help it.  And I’d trying to find excuses to justify that meal “well I was mindful when I ate that steak/fish/pork chop” or “I was feeling weak & so I needed the ‘protein’.” Yeah, right. Shame on me.

Let’s hope with this pledge will kick off to a long term humane diet.

Alex’s new bed

November 9, 2007

I went to Ikea this afternoon hoping to buy a picture frame to hang on my office wall.  I ended up buying everything else except the picture frame.

I found a rattan bed in the pet section & I immediately thought of Ruby.  She was always sleeping either on my sofa or on the hard floor under the TV.  So I thought the bed would be ideal under the TV.  The problem is, the very second I placed the bed there, Alex ‘choped’ it.

Now I have go back to Ikea?

Behind bars

Junior has been picking on Zen this week & I decided to put them together until he learns to get along with Zen.

Zen went to sleep almost immediately & Junior was left a little stupid growling by himself.  His growling eventually dropped to a whimper, begging to be let out.

Let’s see if he will pick on Zen again.

Surfing net on the bus

November 9, 2007

From today, a free high-speed mobile broadband service will be available on 12 bus routes.  Read the article here.

Great, if I can get a seat on the bus & if the journey is long to warrant surfing.  I admit I don’t commute much on buses.  Most time when I do, it is to visit my mom who lives 5 bus stops aways but it takes half hour to get there because the waiting time for the bus averages between 10 - 20 minutes for a 10 minute journey. And 7 out of 10 times, it is a full bus & I have squeeze myself in.

Why can’t the bus companies just give us more buses & clean ones too without the cochroaches running up & down the aisle?  I for one, certainly don’t need frills like the internet.

Chaos wishes everyone a Happy Deepavali!

.. but please don’t play those lit candles.  Ouch!

chao.jpg

The candles are lit in the memory of Jimes & countless community cats who are abandoned, culled & passed away under unfortunate circumstances.

Our thoughts are with them & may we always remind ourselves to extend kindness and compassion to all sentient beings.
