And the kitty makes eight

December 9, 2008

Looks like Wolfie’s not going anywhere.  He’ll be the 8th and the last.  He and Zen have grown so attached to each other now, it would be simply cruel to seperate the ‘love birds.’

US Presidential Elections

November 5, 2008

Personally, nothing would make me more relieved than Obama winning this election.  LIke Christine Amanpour said, this election will change the world.  Never before, as far as I can recall, has an election electrified the world as this one has, for a long long time.

Right now, with priorities changed, the issue of the global crisis takes precedence over war. I hope the Americans are savvy enough to discern the best candidate who can take the US and the world out of this immediate crisis.

JACKSON TWP.: Some Santas are born jolly. Some have jolly thrust upon them.

Ken Dexter, a 48-year-old Massillon factory welder posing with dogs and cats at PetSmart on Saturday, first donned the red suit for the Stark County Humane Society 15 years ago.

It was the first time he volunteered for the annual photo session, and the female Santa was having a rough day, Dexter remembered.

”She was very impatient,” he said.

”’Look,’ I said, ‘these people are here to take a picture. They want a good picture.’ And I said, ‘Why don’t you just have a little bit of patience with them?’ She goes, ‘Well, if you think you can do a better job . . . here.’ She stopped right in front of the kids. Took her Santa suit off right in front of the kids and handed it to me. So ever since then, I’ve done it.”

Jason & DeMarco

Jason & DeMarco to perform here on 13 December.  They are a music partners as well as life partners.  They were originally slated to perform in Singapore in April 2005 but the concert was banned by MDA because they are a gay couple.  You can read more on this in Yawning Bread.

Recently MDA lifted the ban recently on assurance that the aim of the concert is Aids education & HIV prevention.  Again, go to Yawning Bread for more background info.

Here’s a clip of their performance in Pride Rally in New York, June this year.  They are good.

You can find more of their videos on YouTube.

How to treat a cat bite

November 22, 2007

As many as 40 percent of cat bites become infected and require medical care. If you were to get bitten by a cat you should immediately clean the bite with a disinfectant and monitor it closely so that it doesn’t get infected. If in doubt, always visit a doctor to be safe.

Here’s a guideline on what you should do if you are bitten (in italics are my comments):

1. Clean the wound immediately with soap and water, rubbing alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide.  Washed the wound with water & soap but that’s about it.

2. Put pressure on the wound to stop the bleeding. Did that.

3. Hold the wound above your heart if the bite is on your hand or arm. Oh is it? Too late.

4. Place a clean bandage over the wound. No bandage in the house.  Used a hand towel instead.

5. Assess the wound for signs of infection: unusual redness or swelling, increasing warmth in the area, red streaking, or fever. See a doctor if signs of infection develop. Experiencing pain, redness, swelling, heat in the area & I can’t straighten my arm now.  Upside, no fever.

6. Get a tetanus shot if your primary series is incomplete or if it has been more than five years since your last shot. What shot?

7. Determine the rabies vaccine status of the cat. The cat should be observed for 15 days to see if it develops signs of rabies if its vaccine status is uncertain. Oookay ….

Facts on cats

November 11, 2007

Did you know ….

A cat’s heart beats twice as fast as a human heart, at 110 to 140 beats per minute.

The largest cat breed is the Ragdoll.   The smallest cat breed is the Singapura.

The domestic cat is the only cat species able to hold its tail vertically while walking.  All wild cats hold their tails horizontally or tucked between their legs while walking.

If your cat is near you, and her tail is quivering, this is the greatest expression of love your cat can give you.

The weirdest cat on record was a female called Mincho who went up a tree in Argentina and didn’t come down again until she died six years later.  While treed, she managed to have three litters with equally ambitious dads.

A cat will kill it’s prey based on movement, but may not necessarily recognize that prey as food.  Realizing that prey is food is a learned behavior.

The richest cat in the Guiness Book of World Records is a pair of cats who inherited US$41,000 in the early ’60s.  The richest single cat is a white alley cat who inherited US$250,000. (Now that will buy a lot of catnips!)

The Giraffe, Camel and Cat are the only animals that walk by moving both their left feet, then both their right feet, when walking.  This method of walking ensures speed, agility and silence.

It is believed that a white cat sitting on your doorstep just before your wedding is a sign of lasting happiness.  White cats are a symbol of good luck in America, while black cats are a sign of bad luck.

Your cat is probably either a “righty” or a “lefty.”  Only 40% of cats are ambidextrous while another 40% are either right-pawed or left-pawed.

Cats love high places.  They share this love with leopards and jaguars, who sleep in trees.

Domestic cats are essentially loners.   When placed in a group, they develop their own hierarchy.  As long as there is plenty of food on hand, a cat can learn to share it’s domain with other cats.

A cat that bites you after you have rubbed his stomach, is probably biting out of pleasure, not anger.

Surfing net on the bus

November 9, 2007

From today, a free high-speed mobile broadband service will be available on 12 bus routes.  Read the article here.

Great, if I can get a seat on the bus & if the journey is long to warrant surfing.  I admit I don’t commute much on buses.  Most time when I do, it is to visit my mom who lives 5 bus stops aways but it takes half hour to get there because the waiting time for the bus averages between 10 – 20 minutes for a 10 minute journey. And 7 out of 10 times, it is a full bus & I have squeeze myself in.

Why can’t the bus companies just give us more buses & clean ones too without the cochroaches running up & down the aisle?  I for one, certainly don’t need frills like the internet.
